Alphabet-Backed Waymo Expands Robotaxi Service in San Francisco Peninsula and Silicon Valley
Waymo, the autonomous vehicle unit under Alphabet (GOOGL), is extending its robotaxi operations across new regions in the San Francisco Peninsula and Silicon Valley following regulatory approval from California. The expansion includes Brisbane, South San Francisco, San Bruno, Millbrae, and Burlingame, with additional coverage in Palo Alto and Menlo Park.
Concurrently, Tesla (TSLA) is gearing up to launch a competing paid robotaxi service in Austin, Texas, signaling heightened rivalry in the self-driving sector. Waymo has also broadened its Los Angeles service area to neighborhoods like Playa del Rey and Echo Park, though its San Jose rollout remains pending.
